AI-Powered SEO Tools: Why I Stopped Adding Subscriptions

Key Takeaway

AI-powered SEO tools often mean another $129 to $299 a month. Here's what that stack already costs you, and why I moved the work into Claude Code.

Are AI-powered SEO tools worth another monthly subscription? For most people, no, and the monthly bill isn’t even the biggest cost. I stopped adding subscriptions and moved most of the work into Claude Code, which I already pay for.

This isn’t for an agency with ten people living in one dashboard. It’s for the person paying every month for tools they open twice.

What are you paying for right now?

Start with the bill. Most all-in-one SEO suites cost $129 to $299 a month. Then the add-ons arrive: a writing tool, an AI assistant, a rank tracker.

But the bill is only the first line. Here’s the full list.

The costWhat it looks like
Money$129 to $299 a month for a suite, before add-ons
Unused featuresReports you pay for and never open
TimeExport, paste into a chat, paste the answer back, repeat
Your dataIt lives in their dashboard, not your project

You’re paying all four this month. Not someday. Now.

Is the subscription the biggest cost?

No. The biggest cost is the copying.

Look at a normal SEO afternoon. Pull keywords from one tool. Paste them into a spreadsheet. Paste a chunk into an AI chat. Copy the answer into the page. Check the page in a third tool.

Every hop is a chance to paste the wrong thing. And every hop takes a few minutes you never get back.

Count the hops for one week. Then put a price on your hours.

What does “AI-powered” usually mean?

Often it means a chat box added to the same dashboard. The AI sits inside their tool. Your files sit somewhere else. You still carry things between them.

Claude Code works the other way round. The AI sits where your files already live, in a folder on your computer. It reads the pages, runs commands, fetches web pages and edits files itself, asking before it changes anything.

Be careful with big promises, too. Google says it plainly in its own guide to AI search: “No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems.” That goes for every tool, AI or not. Use tools that help your work. Don’t pay extra for a claim of inside knowledge.

What did I replace?

The work, not the data. You still need real search data. The question is how you pay for it.

I run my keyword research inside Claude Code and pay cents per search instead of a monthly subscription. A busy month costs a busy month’s worth of searches. A quiet month costs a quiet month’s worth.

The same folder handles the rest. Claude Code checks titles and headings across a site’s files. It drafts from my notes. It reads Search Console exports. One plan, one place.

I’m on the $100 Max plan and use it daily, mostly to build websites for local businesses. The SEO work rides on a plan I’d be paying for anyway.

How the research is wired up isn’t something I’ll explain in a blog post. The free video shows it.

What does the math look like?

Here are the numbers side by side. Claude prices are from Anthropic’s pricing page, read on 28 Oct 2026.

SetupMonthly cost
All-in-one SEO suite$129 to $299
Claude Pro (includes Claude Code)$20, or $17 billed yearly
Claude Max (includes Claude Code)$100 or $200
Keyword data inside Claude CodeCents per search, only when you search

Pro is enough to start. Max is for people who work in it all day.

When should you keep a subscription?

Keep it if your team shares client reports out of it every day. Keep it if you need years of history you can’t rebuild. Keep it if you never want to open a project folder.

Don’t cancel anything on the strength of a blog post, this one included. Run one real month side by side first. Then look at what you actually opened.

What does waiting cost?

Here’s the part people skip. Every month you don’t check is another month at full price.

That isn’t a saving you’ll make later. It’s money leaving this month, for reports you didn’t read, plus the hours spent carrying data between tabs.

The cost is already being paid. The only question is whether you keep paying it.

Frequently asked questions

What are AI-powered SEO tools? Tools that use AI for SEO jobs like keyword ideas, content drafts and site audits. Many are a traditional SEO dashboard with an AI assistant added.

Can Claude Code replace an SEO tool subscription? For a lot of the work, yes. It can audit site files, draft content and read your data, and you can run keyword research inside it at cents per search. You still need real search data, and someone who knows what good SEO looks like.

Is Claude Code an SEO tool? No. It’s an AI that works inside a folder on your computer. SEO is one of the jobs you can give it, alongside building the site itself.

Do AI SEO tools have Google’s data? No. Google says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. For data on your own site, Search Console is Google’s own source, and it’s free.
