What Is Claude Code? A Plain-English Guide
What is Claude Code? An AI that works inside a folder on your computer. It reads and writes your files, runs commands, and checks risky actions first.

What is Claude Code? It’s an AI you give a folder to. It reads what’s in the folder, writes new files, runs commands, and checks with you or a safety check before anything risky. That’s it. You describe the job in plain English, and it does the work where your files actually live.
If that sounds like ChatGPT, it isn’t. Here’s the difference, one question at a time.
Isn’t it just ChatGPT with a different name?
No. ChatGPT and the regular Claude chat give you answers. You copy them, paste them somewhere, and hope they work.
Claude Code doesn’t hand you text to paste. It opens the file and makes the change itself. Then it can run the thing to see if the change worked.
Think of the difference between a friend telling you how to fix a leaky tap and a plumber who comes over and fixes it.
| A chat assistant | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | In a chat window | Inside a folder on your computer |
| What you get | Text you copy and paste | Files it creates and edits itself |
| Can it run things? | No | Yes, commands and tests, with your OK |
| Does it see your project? | Only what you paste in | Every file in the folder |
Do you need to know how to code?
No. I’m a regular guy who builds websites for local businesses, and I describe what I want the same way I’d explain it to a person.
“Add a contact page with a form that sends to my email.” That’s a real instruction. Claude Code works out the files, writes them, and shows you what it did.
You do need to know what you want. Claude Code is fast at building. It can’t decide what your business needs.
Where does it actually run?
On your own computer, inside one folder. You can run it in a terminal, in the desktop app, or inside an editor like VS Code.
The folder is its whole world. It can read and write files in there and run commands in there. It isn’t wandering around the rest of your machine.
Will it change things without asking?
Not the risky ones. New sessions start in what Anthropic calls auto mode: a second safety model reviews each action, lets routine work through, and stops anything risky. If you’d rather approve everything yourself, switch to a stricter mode and it asks before every edit and command.
That’s the part that makes it safe for a beginner. You choose how much it does on its own, and you can tighten it any time.
What can you build with it?
Anything that lives in files. Websites, small tools, scripts that tidy up spreadsheets, reports, landing pages.
I use it to build real sites for real businesses. A builder in the Hudson Valley. A flag store with about a thousand products. My own funnel. The same tool built all of them.
It’s also good at the boring jobs nobody wants. Renaming 200 files. Checking every link on a site. Turning a messy export into a clean table.
So what’s the catch?
There are two.
First, it forgets most of what you told it. Every session starts with a fresh context. Claude Code now keeps some notes of its own between sessions, but it won’t reliably remember your business name, your rules or what you decided yesterday. The fix is a file in your folder called CLAUDE.md that it reads at the start of every session. More on that in another post.
Second, “done” isn’t proof. Claude Code will tell you a task is finished. Sometimes it is. Sometimes a button doesn’t work or a form goes nowhere. You check. Open it, click it, see it work.
Neither one is a reason not to use it. They’re the two habits that separate people who build things from people who give up after a day.
How much does it cost?
It comes with Claude’s paid plans. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay for the year. The free plan doesn’t include it. I’ve broken down the plans, and what I actually pay, in How Much Does Claude Code Cost?
Is it worth learning?
If you’ve ever wanted to build something and got stuck on the technical part, yes. That’s the part Claude Code takes off your hands.
It won’t think for you. It won’t pick your customers or write your offer. But the gap between “I have an idea” and “it’s live” has never been smaller.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Code free? No. It’s included with Claude’s paid plans, starting with Pro at $20 a month. The free Claude plan doesn’t include it.
Is Claude Code the same as Claude? It’s the same AI, used a different way. Claude is the chat. Claude Code works inside a folder on your computer and makes the changes itself.
Do I need to be a programmer to use Claude Code? No. You describe what you want in plain English. It helps to be clear about what you want, and to check the result yourself.
Can Claude Code break my computer? It works inside the folder you open it in. By default a safety check reviews risky actions, and you can switch to a mode that asks before every change. Keep your project in Git and you can undo any change it makes.
Want to see it build a real site? I made a free video that walks through it, start to finish. Watch the free video.
