How Much Does Claude Code Cost? What I Actually Pay

How much does Claude Code cost? $20 a month on the Pro plan, or $17 a month if you pay for a year up front. Heavy users can go up to Max at $100 or $200 a month. There’s no separate Claude Code bill. It comes with the plan.

I pay $100 a month for Max. Most people should start on Pro. Here’s how I’d decide.

The plans, side by side

Prices from Anthropic’s pricing page, checked on 28 October 2026.

PlanPriceClaude Code?Who it’s for
Free$0NoTrying the chat
Pro$20/month, or $17/month billed yearly ($200)YesMost people starting out
Max 5x$100/monthYesWorking with it every day
Max 20x$200/monthYesAll day, every day

Max also includes $100 or $200 a month in API credits for building on Anthropic’s platform. That matters to developers. Most beginners won’t touch it.

What “usage limits” actually means

This is the part people don’t expect. You don’t buy a number of messages. You buy a share of usage that resets on a rolling five-hour window, with a weekly cap on top.

Your chats and your Claude Code work come out of the same pool. A long build session uses more than a quick question. Bigger models use more than smaller ones.

When you hit the limit, you have three choices:

  1. Wait for it to reset.
  2. Move up a plan.
  3. Turn on usage credits and pay standard API rates for the extra.

You can see where you stand any time in Settings, then Usage.

What I actually pay

I’m on Max, the $100 plan. That’s what I use every day.

Claude Code is how I build everything now. Websites for local businesses, my own sales funnel, the scripts that cut and caption my videos, the keyword research behind every page. It runs most of the day, most days.

For that much work, $100 a month is the cheapest tool I pay for. If I were only building on weekends, I’d be on Pro.

Three ways to tell which plan you need

1. How often you hit the limit. Start on Pro. If you keep running out mid-build, and it’s costing you real work, that’s your sign to move up. If you never hit it, Pro is fine.

2. What your time is worth. If waiting three hours for a reset costs you a client deadline, $100 is cheap. If you’re learning on weekends, it isn’t.

3. What it replaces. Count what you’d pay otherwise. A freelancer for a small site. A page builder subscription. Plugins. For a lot of people the plan pays for itself the first month they build something real.

All three point the same way. Start small, and move up only when the limit costs you something.

Can you use Claude Code for free?

Not on the free plan. Claude Code is only included with paid plans.

The other route is pay-as-you-go through Anthropic’s developer console, where you pay per use instead of a monthly fee. It suits developers who want exact control over spend. For most people the monthly plan is simpler and cheaper to predict.

What I’d do if I were starting today

Take Pro, monthly, for one month. Build one real thing with it: a page, a small site, a tool you need.

If you hit the limit every day and it slows you down, try Max for a month. If you don’t, switch Pro to yearly and save $40 ($200 instead of $240).

Don’t start on Max because it sounds serious. Start where the work tells you to.
