Claude Code API or Subscription: Which to Use?
Claude Code API or subscription? Pick a plan if you build most days. Pick the API for light use, scripts, or team billing with hard spend caps.

Pick a subscription if you build with Claude Code most days. Pick the API, through the Claude Console, if your use is light and irregular, you run Claude Code from scripts, or a company needs per-token billing with spend caps.
I pay for a subscription. But the API case is stronger than most people give it credit for, so I’ll make it properly first.
What’s the difference?
A subscription is a flat monthly price. You sign in with your claude.ai account, and your usage resets on a rolling five-hour window with a weekly cap on top.
The API is pay as you go. You open an account in the Claude Console at platform.claude.com, buy credits up front, and pay for every token Claude reads and writes. Then you choose the Console account when Claude Code asks you to log in.
| Subscription | API (Claude Console) | |
|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Pro $20/month ($17 billed yearly), Max $100 or $200 | Pre-paid credits, charged per token |
| What limits you | A usage window that resets every five hours, plus a weekly cap | Your credit balance and any spend limit you set |
| How you sign in | Your claude.ai account | Your Console account, or an API key |
| Where you see spend | /usage plan bars | The Console usage page |
| Who it suits | People building most days | Light use, scripts, teams on API billing |
What’s the strongest case for the API?
Here it is, argued as hard as I can.
You pay for exactly what you use. A quiet month costs only the tokens you spent. You never pay $100 for a plan you barely opened.
You never wait for a reset. There’s no five-hour window to run out of mid-build. If you have credits, you keep working.
You can set hard spend caps. The first time you log in with a Console account, Claude Code creates a workspace called “Claude Code” for tracking costs. You can set a spend limit on that workspace and know your ceiling before you start.
It’s built for automation. claude -p "your task" runs one job and exits, which suits scripts and CI pipelines. In that mode, Claude Code always uses your API key when one is set.
Teams get per-person numbers. The Console dashboard shows spend and accepted lines of code for each member. A business that has to account for every dollar wants exactly that.
The prices are public. Sonnet 5.5 costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Opus 5.5 costs $4 and $20.
If you use Claude Code in bursts, from scripts, or inside a company that bills by usage, the API isn’t the expensive choice. It’s the right one.
So why do most solo builders pick a subscription?
Because daily use adds up fast on the meter.
Anthropic’s own cost guide puts the average at around $13 per developer per active day. That’s $150 to $250 a month per developer across enterprise deployments. Max costs $100 a month. Pro costs $20.
Long sessions make the gap wider. Claude Code sends your whole conversation with every request, so a short question late in a long session still pays for everything before it. On a plan, that shows up as limit used. On the API, it shows up on your bill.
There’s a bonus on Max too. It includes $100 or $200 a month in API credits for building on the Claude Platform, on top of Claude Code.
I’m on the $100 Max plan and use Claude Code every day. At that pace, a flat price is the simple choice.
Who should pick which?
- Learning, or building a few times a week: Pro.
- Building every day and hitting Pro’s limit: Max.
- Using it in bursts, from scripts, or for a team on API billing: the API.
- On a plan and only occasionally hitting the limit: turn on usage credits with
/usage-creditsinstead of changing plans. They let you keep working past the limit.

What’s the trap with an API key?
An API key can quietly take over from your subscription.
If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set on your computer and you approve it when Claude Code asks, Claude Code uses the key. You’d be paying per token while also paying for a plan.
Type /status to see which login is active. To go back to your subscription, remove the variable with unset ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, or turn off “Use custom API key” in /config. Don’t leave an old key sitting in your environment after you move to a plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Claude Code with an API key instead of a subscription?
Yes. Create a Claude Console account and add credits. Then choose the Console account when Claude Code asks you to log in, or set the ANTHROPIC_API_KEY variable.
Is the API cheaper than Claude Pro for Claude Code? For light, occasional use, it can be. For daily use, rarely: Anthropic’s docs put average enterprise API spend at $150 to $250 per developer per month, against $20 for Pro.
Does Claude Max include API credits? Yes. Max 5x includes $100 a month and Max 20x includes $200 a month in API credits for building on the Claude Platform.
How do I check what Claude Code costs me on the API?
Type /usage for an estimate of the current session’s cost. For the real figure, check the Usage page in the Claude Console.
